There’s a single flea within one egg. Each flea egg hatches into one larva Img 1. However, some eggs will be non-viable, and they contain no larvae.

I no longer have pets, my dog passed away in august, I didn’t realize that I had fleas until after he passed, I have had an exterminator in 3 times. I have faithfully vacuumed but the problem seems to be getting worse, is there anything else that I can do?

I’m sorry to hear about your dog passing. Without pets, adult fleas won’t have a host to feed on. They need to blood to reproduce. Humans don’t make suitable hosts.

When you noticed adult fleas in August, there were a large number of immature stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) developing in your carpeting. In home environments, it takes new eggs 17-26 days to reach adulthood. The problem likely seemed to get worse as these young fleas reached adulthood. However, your flea problem is probably close to ending. Without pets, no more eggs are being laid. So, the adults emerging should be the last of them.

One caveat is that pre-emerged adults can remain in a dormant-like state within their cocoons for 5 months. They wait to detect a host (heat and pressure) before they emerge. Vacuuming simulates these host cues and causes emergence.

Keep up the vacuuming and you should be in the clear soon! Extra eradication methods are unnecessary without pets.
