Advantage II Weekly during infestation?

Is it safe to use Advantage II weekly on a dog during a flea infestation? It says not to reapply more often than every 7 days on the package insert, but is this actually an effective method for dealing with emerging fleas on top of the rest of the spraying of igr, vacuuming etc.? Is this dangerous for my dog’s health?
Thank you for your site, it’s very helpful.

Hello J,

You can retreat every 7 days and it should be safe, as per the instructions. However, it probably isn’t necessary unless the infestation is severe and out of control. The instructions say to return to a monthly schedule once a reasonable level of control is attained.

The monthly treatments should remain active for the entire 30 days, and the emerging fleas will die when they jump onto the dog. But keep in mind, it won’t kill them instantly. Most will die within a few hours of contact, but sometimes it may take up to 24 hours. So, it’s not unusual to see fleas here or there on the dog before they die.

With all the other procedures you’re taking (vacuuming, IGR to environment, etc), it probably isn’t necessary to re-treat the dog more than once every month. But that’s up to you, and should be based on how severe your particular infestation is.

Hope this helps!
Adam
