Treating Shoes

Wondering how to treat shoes? I’ve had a flea problem for about 3 months. I sometimes feel a creepy-crawly feeling in my shoes. I only have a couple good pairs of shoes and I wear them to work so it is not practical to put them in the freezer for 10 days. I am nervous to put them in the dryer as I live in a building with a shared washer/dryer and I do not want to damage the equipment. I’ve sprinkled DE on the shoes which seems futile, not to mention messy!

Rainbow23,

There shouldn’t be fleas living in your shoes unless eggs fell there from the infested host. I suppose it is possible for adult fleas to accidentally jump into the shoes while trying to find a host, but they aren’t attracted to these kinds of items.

Steam cleaning the shoes would kill any fleas on them, if you have access to a steam cleaner. No life stage should be able to stick to the shoes, so giving them a good shake, and banging the heels together, should go a long way in removing any potential fleas as well.

I hope this helps!
Adam
