Hello, I am not quite sure what the question is here.

If the adult fleas were eliminated, but immature stages have returned, it’s most likely because the treatments weren’t continued for long enough.

Flea treatments must be continued for at least 8 weeks (sometimes longer), as there will be immature stages developing in carpets that are unseen. When these pre-adult stages mature, the infestation will be reborn.

As mentioned, it can take up to 8 weeks (or longer) for the infestation to end. Most likely your dog is getting fleas from the pet beds, rugs or carpeting, as this is where most immature fleas develop. However, they can also develop in other areas where pets frequently sleep/rest.

The good news it that the Frontline should take care of the problem by itself. It will just take some time. Frontline will kill adult fleas on your dog, as well as kill and sterilize any new fleas that are acquired.

It’s important to note that 95-99% of the flea infestation is composed of immature fleas (eggs, larvae, and pupae). The infestation will not end until all of these stages have matured into adults and have been killed by the Frontline. This is why it takes up to 8 weeks for the infestation to be completely eradicated. And why it’s important to continue the monthly applications of Frontline for the recommend duration on the package.

It’s also important to continue the vacuuming every other day, and washing pet bedding weekly.

If the infestation is severe, it may be prudent to use an indoor premise spray to help eradicate the immature stages more rapidly. Look for products with an insect growth regulator (IGR). The two most common IGRs are pyriproxyfen (Nylar) or (s)-methoprene (Precor).

Likewise, if you believe the fleas are originating outdoors, you have the option to spray the yard with an IGR as well. You find concentrated IGR for outdoor use that can be diluted with water and sprayed in problem areas.

While hot temperatures do kill fleas outdoors, it’s important to keep in mind that adult fleas live on animals. As a such, they’re more protected from the environment than immature stages. In extreme heat, fleas may thrive within animal dens or within indoor shelters. When they leave these shelters and roam around, they end up dropping fleas into neighborhood. So, summer heat won’t make fleas go extinct outdoors.

Fipronil is the active ingredient in Frontline which kills adult fleas. It can take a while for it to eliminate all of the fleas on the animal. It kills around 24.3% of fleas in 3 hours and 62.6% by 8 hours.

Frontline also contains an insect growth regulator (IGR), (s)-methoprene, which will sterilize the females. So, even if new fleas are able to jump on a treated pet and feed, they’ll be sterilized before they’re killed. They won’t be able to lay fertile eggs, so no new generations will be spawned.

For spraying the carpet/floors, you can use an IGR. These compounds prevent immature fleas from pupating. So they’ll never reach adulthood. IGRs work by affecting insect endocrine systems, as the compounds are insect hormone mimics. They are considered safer than traditional insecticides because of their specific action to insects. Martin’s comes a size suitable for indoor use. It’s in concentrated form, so you’ll need to add water before spraying.
