Summary
There are numerous generic brands of Advantage II for Cats available. All of the flea drops listed on this page contain exactly the same active ingredients and concentrations as Advantage II (9.10% imidacloprid and 0.46% pyriproxyfen).
Petlock II for Cats
Petlock II is a cheap alternative to Advantage II, with the same ingredients.
The primary disadvantage of the generic versions is that there’s no product for kittens (2 to 5 lbs.).
PetLock II for Cats is currently the cheapest, widely available alternative to Advantage II for Cats. A four month supply can be found for around $20 on Amazon. The same amount of Advantage II costs around $45. Petlock II can also be found in Petco stores for $27, for those who need the product immediately.

Advantage II for Cats Active Ingredients
The active ingredient formulation in Advantage II for Cats is 9.10% imidacloprid and 0.46% pyriproxyfen. All of the generic alternatives listed below contain the same active ingredients and same concentrations. For full details, compare the product label of Advantage II to the generics’ labels (linked below).
Imidacloprid is an adulticide that quickly kills adult fleas on the treated cat. Pyriproxyfen (Nylar) is an insect growth regulator. It mimics natural insect hormones that control development. Exposed eggs and larvae can’t mature, and exposed adult females can’t lay eggs.

PetLock Plus II for Cats is our choice for the best alternative to Advantage II, because it’s cheap and widely available. A four month supply can be found on Amazon.com for around $20. And it can be found Ebay.com for even cheaper, about $14. For those who can’t wait for shipping, PetLock Plus is available at Petco stores for $27.

Provecta for Cats
Provecta for Cats is another Advantage II for Cats equivalent. View product label
Provecta for Cats is another topical flea treatment for cats that’s essentially the same as Advantage II. Not much differs from the previous products on this page. In fact, PetLock and Provecta are supplied by the same manufacturer, CAP IM Supply Inc. Provecta is slightly more expensive than other options and thus lower on the list.
A four month supply of Provecta can be found on Amazon.com for $33. Popular brick and mortar retailers don’t carry this product.
CrossBlock II for Cats
CrossBlock II for Cats is another alternative to Advantage II for Cats. View product label

ParaDefense for Cats is essentially the same product as Provecta, Petlock II, and Advecta II. All of these flea drops for cats are produced by the same supplier, CAP IM Supply, Inc. The products are just branded differently. The main difference between the treatments are price and availability, and ParaDefense (and Advecta II below) don’t fair well.
Advecta II for Cats
Advecta II for Cats is another Advantage II alternative produced by CAP IM. View product label
Advecta II is another brand of flea drop manufactured by CAP IM Supply, Inc, the same supplier of PetLock II, Provecta, and ParaDefense. Not much differs between these products. However, Advecta II can be found at Walmart and Target.

Sentry VantaGuard 2 for Cats
Sentry VantaGuard 2 for Cats is essentially the same as PetArmor Advanced, but is harder to find. View product label
Sentry VantaGuard 2 is essentially the same as the other Sergeant’s Pet Care flea drops, PetArmor Advanced and Sentry Advance Guard2. In fact, Sentry Advance Guard2 seems like it may be the newer version of VantaGuard. Regardless, VantaGuard is included in this list for completeness.

Thanks for this! Awesome.
Could different “Other Ingredients” have any possible negative effect when combined with the “Active Ingredients”? We’ve had no serious problem with Advantage II. It is powerful and the cat sleeps more than usual for the first 24hrs. after an application. The drugging and cost are prohibitive so with careful flea inspections the doses can be given at six week intervals without incident.
Thank you for the research. I will give one of the above a try and report back to you.
I am no expert on the effects of the ingredients. However, the other ingredients are inert and usually just used as carriers and to dilute the active ingredients. They shouldn’t have negative effects, but, again, I am not 100% certain on that.
I accidentally ordered the Crossblock II for cats over nine pounds and was wondering how to split the dose for smaller cats.
It is illegal to to use insecticide products in a way that deviates from the label. So, unfortunately I can’t legally offer advice. However, here is the product label where you can see dosages and ingredients for the different Crossblock II for Cats products.
If it was me, I’d find the Advantage II package for Extra Large Dogs on a good sale. It seems that the one for dogs has the exact same ingredients as the cat formulation – looks like that reading the ingredients list. I bet I could find a dosage chart on the internet showing how much to use on cats. Just throwing this out there, not advising anyone to use the dog Advantage II for anything else, but just wondering out loud.
