K9 Advantix II Active Ingredients
The active ingredient formulation in K9 Advantix II is 8.80% imidacloprid, 44.00% permethrin, and 0.44% pyriproxyfen (Nylar). All of the generic alternatives listed below contain the same active ingredients, and in the same or similar concentrations. For complete details, compare K9 Advantix’s product label to the labels of the generic versions (linked below).
Imidacloprid is an adulticide that kills adult fleas. Permethrin is another adulticide that also kill ticks, since imidacloprid doesn’t affect ticks. Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator, which mimics natural insect hormones. Exposed females are sterilized, and exposed eggs and larvae can’t mature.

I have a 15 pound Pug. Normally I should get the “Medium Dog” package (11 to 20 pounds) of Advantix II . I though if I get the Advantix II for Large Dogs (21-55 pounds), I could give my Pug 1/2 the dose of the large dog each month. That would mean that I effectively would get 12 months from a 6 month package. This is on the assumption that the only difference between the Small Dog and thre4 Large Dog is the quantity, then can I assume that the strength of the 1/2 dose will be the same as a normal full dose from the Small Dog package. PLEASE ANSWER A..S.A.P. as I’m ready to use now.
I can’t advise you to use any insecticide product in a way that deviates from the label. However, here is a breakdown of the dosages: K9 Advantix II Dosage Chart. The Large Dog dosage is actually 2.5 times the amount of the Medium Dog dosage.
Adam Retzer I tried that last summer and put it on my smaller dog first and got too much on him and just about burned him up. I didn’t realize it until all med had been absorbed into his skin a few days later. His skin started peeling and some hair fell out. But you could see that the top layer of his skin was wrinkled, curling and peeling from the burn. It burned him all over, his back, not just where I had put the med.
Just be very careful if you do that. Good luck.
I always use the extra large dog Advantix II for my small dogs. Just squeeze the medicine into an amber medicine vial, draw out the amount you need with a medicine dropper, and put it on your dog. Close the vial and save the rest for next time. Just make sure you know the correct amount for your dog’s weight.
Hi,
I’ve been using Advecta 3 on my standard poodle with good results for about 6 months.
I recently got another poodle pup and took him to the vet. The vet tech said he didn’t think the generics for Advantix could work as well because the technology that allows it to spread all over the animal is still patented.
What is your opinion of his observation?
I haven’t seen any fleas or ticks on my older dog, and I like saving money. But, I also want to do what’s best for my dogs.
Thanks,
Becky
The active ingredient, imidacloprid or fipronil, is what spreads across the animal. And it is the same ingredients as in the generics. You can read more about it on our page here: How flea medicines spread.
I have a 10 lb. Maltese, is Advantix II more effective than Frontline Gold?
Both products should be similar in effectiveness. They both use a modern adulticide, either fipronil or imidacloprid. And they both contain an insect growth regulator, either pyriproxyfen or methoprene. Advantix also contains permethrin to kill ticks, because imidacloprid doesn’t kill ticks. Frontline doesn’t include permethrin because fipronil kill ticks.
