Will Bravecto break the flea cycle?

QuestionsCategory: Flea Control ProductsWill Bravecto break the flea cycle?

I found fleas on my Dog at the end of September. I immediately started her on Bravecto and Frontline plus. Bravecto claims that their product will break the flea cycle in 3 months, but it’s been almost 3 months and I am still getting the occasional bite on me. I have also bombed my home as well as used a spray on nooks and crannys (both contain IGR). I was just wondering if my flea problem will sort out if I just keep my dog on Bravecto with regular vacuuming and laundering. Thanks

Duomeng,

Bravecto should control the fleas on your dog. I haven’t done a lot of research into this product yet, but in order to get onto the market it has to be tested and proven effective and safe. The active ingredient is fluralaner. You may want to research academic articles on google scholar for more information.

Even after the dog is treated, fleas will still be developing in the environment. 95-99% of the population are immature stages in the environment. Some will escape insecticide treatments and vacuuming. So most people still see the occasional flea and bite, even after proper treatment. Usually fleas go away after 8 weeks, but it can be longer.

The cocooned adults can go quiescent for up to 5 months, but there shouldn’t be many. Heat and pressure trigger emergence. Vacuuming and your dog wandering the home should cause them to emerge.

It sounds like you’ve taken all the correct steps. Vacuuming and applying the IGR will help prevent re-infestation. Are you still using Frontline Plus along with the Bravecto? If you’re concerned the Bravecto isn’t working, it may be wise to purchase a flea comb, and check to make sure adult fleas aren’t surviving on your dog.

In summary, it sounds like your problem should resolve soon. Continue the vacuuming, and keep the dog treated for the recommended duration on the label.

Warm regards,
Adam
